Hello,

I have a question for you guys.

Here's the background story on what happened:

Someone bought an ebay item through buy it now that I was selling last month for ten thousand dollars and then several hours later that day sent me a message claiming that her account was hacked and that it was an unauthorized purchase. Shortly after that message I got an ebay customer service message saying that they had reversed the transaction.

Recently, I noticed that in my seller hub it still shows the transaction even though the transaction was reversed in that my monthly, yearly, and all time sales totals all have a ten thousand dollar discrepancy. I called ebay customer service to see is they could fix the discrepancy but they told me that they can't help me with that.

Hopefully this is not the case but on the surface it seems to me like ebay is not removing the returned, canceled, or reversed transactions from your totals to make it look like sellers are selling more than they actually are.

To be honest, I never would have noticed it if it wasn't such a huge discrepancy. At the moment my sellers' hub shows that I sold about 2.3 times more than what I actually sold in the last 12 months.

Has anyone here run into this issue? Please let me know your thoughts on the matter and please let me know if you have any questions for me. Thanks.

I find it very surprising that you don't keep your own records of what you've sold and for how much.

One of the earliest rules that I learnt in business is that you have to check all your invoices, goods notes, supplier and customer statements (including bank statements), and do a regular inventory check.

You're obviously making way too much profit - or are you ?

I don't really need to keep that many records since in the last 12 months I have only sold 26 items. So, I tend to just go through my received PayPal transactions at the end of the year.

Due to the low transaction volume I don't really check my seller hub very often.

Not really... I mostly sell on ebay to turn over my personal collection as my collecting preferences evolve.

I've never experienced such a strange sale/no sale but I do track all my numbers by the month and have never seen any discrepancies such as you describe.

I wouldn't let that situation ride. It could very well put you above the "report to IRS" level.

I've always paid my taxes, but I suspect that if the IRS received that statement from ebay showing much higher sales, you would be in an even bigger mess.

My e-Bay account was hacked a few months ago and someone tried to use it to buy some highly priced photographic equipment. E-Bay stopped the sale as it didn't match my normal buying pattern and they were suspicious that 'I' had asked for the items to be sent to Nigeria! I found e-Bay customer services very helpful but I often wonder about the 'seller' of the photographic equipment!

As a buyer I have had the experience of a seller agreeing to cancel an order and getting a credit, but the item showing as unpaid under "Purchases" in e-bay. Eventually it disappears, though.

I ran into this issue almost 2 years ago, a $750 purchase that was in December and returned before the year was over. The item was returned directly to me and the buyer did not use the ebay return process.

Long story short, I called ebay and then I refunded via paypal, but my totals to this day still show that amount included in my totals for that year and my all time total sales.

My accountant advised me to print out the receipt for the refund via paypal, and I had deduct on a separate line for "returns" to net the real sales amount.

ebay told me they would look into it but they never did and never will. so Yes, your sales numbers can look inflated. you have to take the gross amount of sales and back out the "returns". I find that cancels will be backed out of the ebay sales totals but not refunds. you have to keep track and deduct that off your total sales numbers.

In my case it wasn't so much that the ebay numbers were inflated, but more importantly I got a 1099k from paypal, so the total was the gross amount.

Hope that helps

I've had that happen too. I don't think it disappears though. ebay settings usually show the last 60 days. After that it becomes hidden. But you can go back and see it if you change the See Orders tab to show a longer time frame.

That's actually what I'm worried about. I really don't want to have to deal with a needless audit over this matter.

As far as not letting the situation ride, I'm not really sure if there is anything that can be done here since I have already talked to ebay customer service and gotten nowhere.

The only other thing that I can think of that I could do is file a Federal Trade Commission complaint against ebay in regards to this matter but I don't really know if that will help either.
