I thought that in order to get the FS distinction there couldn't be a break in the steps from one side to the other, and then I came across these photos!?! Can someone clear this up for me, because I've passed on many ungraded coins ( Jefferson nickels) with steps similar to what's representated in these pics thinking they needed to be clearly defined better to get the FS grading...

What you're saying is something most of us know - with the TPGs, it's basically just a throw of the dice, with you paying to get in the game. Good examples, thanks.

Got ya... in other words it all depends on the individual doing the grading and their personal interpretation/preference... perhaps I should lower my standards from time to time and take some more chances occasionally!! Thanks

The grader probably saw a 'faint' line and considered it to not be broken.

That was my understanding as well. Any hits, breaks or wear that "interrupts" any step lines from left to right, kills the FS designator. But what do I know, I'm not a grader.

Just my opinion, those pics are terrible looking steps. Wouldn't you agree?

Although, any steps for those years are probably exceptional!
