There are interesting (to me) connections between this $5 gold coin and our classic silver commemorative set and modern circulation coinage ... the only modern commemorative IMHO to achieve this trifecta of intersections.
The story begins with the competition to design the 1932 dated
Washington quarter ... it was originally intended as a 1 year commemorative to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Washingtons birth.
The 'winning' designer for the 1932
Washington quarter commemorative was
Laura Gardin Fraser ... she of much fame as the designer of several classic silver commemorative ... notably the 1921 Alabama half ... 1922 Grant half ... 1925 Fort Vancouver half ... and the obverse (Indian Chief) side of the Oregon Trail half.
Alas Laura 'winning' design for the 1932
Washington quarter was vacated ... and replaced by the
John Flanagan design that we have all been carrying in our pockets for over 80+ years.
Soooo ... in 1999 ... on the Bicentennial of George Washington death ... the US Mint issues a $5 commemorative gold coin and the obverse is ....
Laura Gardin Fraser rejected 1932 quarter design.
You have to enjoy that history as a fan of these coins.
