I came across an ebay auction for a group of U.S. coins that included this 1884 Liberty nickel with one end flattened out. The auction's photos aren't the best, but the rest of the coin doesn't appear to be damaged.

Is this a mint error or did someone have some fun and flattened out one side of the coin? Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Sorry the quality of the photos isn't better.

I'll say PMD. Odd-looking indeed.

Hammer banging at the extreme. Tough to flatten nickels.

Possibly ran through a press machine?

Most likely, it is not a mint damage..
Rest in Peace

Ran over by a streetcar, tracks and pressure

Looks like it was flattened by an object such as a hammer or possibly a streetcar as Crazyb0 said.

Flattened by something but not a hammer, something with a straight edge.
