Picked this up for $23. Thoughts on grade and problems as always appreciated!

What a strike difference. Lighter than usual obverse with a very strong reverse strike. The obverse is missing significant high points from that lighter strike.

The technical grade for the reverse is right at 40. The light obverse strike does not influence technical grade, but it certainly affects eye appeal and value.

Not my favorite piece, especially on such a common coin.

You need to hold out for strong strikes on 3 Cent Nickel and Shield nickels. They won't cost more but it does require patience. Avoid examples with die cracks and other common errors. Early strikes are most likely to avoid those die problems. In those two series you DON'T want errors.

It is a remarkable strike difference, I agree. I personally would grade the reverse a bit higher, but overall this is quite an oddball.

EF-40 seems to be the only logical conclusion, but this is not a coin I would want to own.
