Beautiful example. It begs the question of why medals are often so much more beautiful than coins.

I would assume a much lower mintage allows for slower striking, which permits much higher relief and a very detailed design. Also, perhaps the dies are also retired sooner preventing the qualities from fading.

I am just guessing. I expect an expert will come confirm or correct my assumptions.
