The one just west of the building is odd to me. I haven't seen a die chip that isn't connected to a device. Is it possible? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Oh yeah! That's absolutely possible to happen! I have seen it happen on Lincoln Memorial cents where the end of Memorial roof gets only one big Die Chip with no Die Cracks connected to it.

You're right Newbie, it usually is connected to a device. That's because it's a stress point on the die from repeated strikes on the device edge. This one's a little away from the device, why is anybody's guess. My guess is on this coin the planchet metal near the device was a little stronger than farther out, or maybey there was a small void farther out, maybe a weaker foreign substance in the planchet. We see chips and gouges in the fields from objects that have poked the die fairly frequently. I think the location and size of this one supports my guess.

You're welcome. I bumped your post back at the top so other CCF members can answer it. When I see posts unanswered, I try to give an answer so it doesn't remain unanswered.
