I have a dealer near me who lets me look through some great caches of coins. Today, he let me look through his Australia pennies. Here's a few that I found: A beautiful 1911 Penny that retains some flat, lustrous fields (I wish it would photograph) A 1913 Halfpenny in better shape than a typical bargain bin coin: A fairly worn 1944-M Penny that has a lamination defect running from the nose across the head: 1942-I Penny. Is it just me, or is this a slightly different Kangaroo design? So far, no luck finding a 1925, 1930 (lol), or 1946 Penny. Yet I'm pretty happy with this group!

Thanks! I had to pay a little for the 1911, but still far below Maccas. The rest cost me 0.25 each--if you can believe it. Btw, can anyone give me the Maccas range on the 1913 Halfpenny? Thank you!

Kurt, some very nice coins there. 1913 1/2d prices $38 Vf, $115 Ef, $300 aUnc and $$825 Unc. All in all I would say well done.

yes I can, 1 sec...
AUD $$$ Very Good - $1.50 Fine - $7.50 Very Fine - $38 Extra Fine - $115
2160 000 is the mintage.
Wish my 1911s were like that :(
The coin dealer yesterday didn't have any in the cheap penny box, but he would have had a few in his album!

There is some luster in the fields, so perhaps it's better than a solid Fine? Guess it was a good buy for $0.25!

Nice shopping Kurt. That 1911 looks at least good EF, most probably better though. The 11 penny is notorious for for soft, weak strike on the orb cross and first set(7th, 8th)pearls. Love the splash of colour on the reverse. Also is that a light Die Crack through the AUST of AUSTRALIA reverse? If so, would make it even more desirable. The 1913 Half D is Better than fine, not quite VF, my 13th ed maccas has fine $7.00 and VF $35.00, so at $0.25, incredible buying. 1944, many contacts, VG+. The 1942I is an interesting coin. Firstly is a Bombay mint. Characteristics are different roos face, the roo sits lower in the relief(closer to the rim), and the lettering is bolder than other 42 pennies. There are large dots before and after the P and Y of Penny, and has an I mint mark under the kings bust. All are normal characteristics for the 1942I, but what is interesting is there is an impression of the kings head showing on the reverse. This is commonly called ghosting and is a result of ramped up strike pressure when minted. Maybe Good VF, but the contacts on the reverse and kings neck and ear may bring it down a touch to the very fussy. I'd say overall, an absolute bargain buy Kurt.

Thank you for sharing your expertise! Quote: Also is that a light Die Crack through the AUST of AUSTRALIA reverse? Yes, as well as a light crack through LTH and OF. There's also one through BRITT on the obverse--nothing dramatic though. I also noticed a different style of obverse lettering for the 1942 I.

Quote: I also noticed a different style of obverse lettering for the 1942 I. The 1942I has a different obverse and reverse to the Perth minted coins. This obverse has been the subject of much discussion. Information on this can be found on the Triton link supplied by gnome( cheers) on the following page of this thread.

Quote: so theres 42 pennys without the I.. Sure is Eddy, of course the 1942y Perth coins don't, but some 1942I coins don't either. Very difficult to get hold of and suggested 0.5% of the Bombay mintage are genuine no mint mark coins. It is also suggested that about 70% of these no I coins were melted down. There are others that have a very weak mint mark, but these, although very collectible as well, are not genuine no mint mark varieties, just clogged/ filled die coins.
