Hello guys, I recently bought this dime which was sold as an "impaired proof". I am quite skeptical, and am thinking this could be a business strike. What do you guys think is the designation of this dime and what are some ways to tell apart an impaired proof from a business strike?

Thanks!

Very difficult to tell with those pics.

The rims tell me it might be a proof, but the surfaces in the protected areas tell me otherwise. Obviously a strong strike with full bands but is it an impaired proof and is it worth somewhere near proof money? Not in my book.

If it were me buying a proof Merc I'd want the real deal for sure in at least PF 63 minimum and in a legit slab.

Proof Mercs are not that rare and are not terribly expensive.

I'd return the coin for a refund. It'll always be a "problem" coin and it won't get better with time.

Thanks for your opinion, @westernsky!

I definitely agree that for my collection, I would prefer a solid graded proof, and that this is obviously not it.

However, I do actually see proof-like surfaces in the protected areas. The cover picture probably doesn't show this well enough. I have updated the topic post to show some still shots that show those surfaces better.

Alas, I cannot return the item unless it's misdescribed, and since I do not know whether it is indeed proof, this coin is in a state of limbo, so-to-speak.

I actually do think it is an impaired proof, but not FSB.

There is almost always a reason why a "bargain" is a bargain.

Some early business strike has the appearance of prooflike, millions have weak strike especially weak around the peripheral, but this one looks strong but has all the original proof luster gone and everything with it.

Pictures is hard to tell unless examining the coin at hand to determine whether if its a proof.

I think it looks to be a Proof but not 100% sure.

I guess the real question is how much did you pay for it and do you want to put more $$ into it to get it certified as an impaired proof.

As I said earlier it will ALWAYS be a problem coin every time you look at it. That fact will not go away.

You can also look at it as part of the tuition of your BA "degree" in Numismatics. (I'm darn near 70 and and have been working on my "degree" for almost 60 years!)
