I understand that a pattern is basically a test of a new or proposed design.

Shouldn't there be modern-day patterns, then? Why is it that almost all the patterns we're aware of are from the 19th century? Or maybe they don't do patterns anymore? Does anyone know the date of the most recent pattern?

There was some discussion of a 1977 dollar pattern recently, over here: http://goccf.com/t/302359

I'm guessing that newer design technologies make the need for producing physical patterns less necessary, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Watch HERITAGE. They sell plenty of post 1960's patterns. They are or recently were selling a nice selection of Martha Washington patterns.
