I have a 2012 D nickel that was not plated with nickel on the face side. The back is normal but the front side is a copper/ zinc color. Was this a common occurrence? I'm very new to searching and collecting coins. Thanks for any advice.

To CCF! We will need pictures in order to give you an answer. Without pictures, there will be a lot of speculation.

to the forum!

Nickels are solid all the way through.

It could have been laying somewhere corrosive with only one side exposed. Either way it is post mint damage, not a collectable.

Interesting. I'll try and get some pictures tomorrow. I need to learn how to take a good clear closeup.

My advice on pictures is to take a pic from farther away and zoom in. Clear pictures are better then muddy close-ups. :) Also, I bought a cheap little $10 set of lenses that clip on to my iPhone (or any phone) and it takes awesome close-ups with the macro lens. :) HAPPY NEW YEAR!

@rft, first welcome to CCF. Second, those pics are very helpful. I agree with the others that something has discolored the obverse of this nickel after it left the mint. It could have been left sitting in a liquid that stained the surface or painted on purpose--in the end it doesn't much matter. This nickel is worth face value only. It looks kinda neat so save it if you want, but it isn't worth more than the five cents.
