I have a bowl of wheat cents I have set aside, all of which have verdigris on them to some degree. I wanted to start experimenting in removing the verdigris with verdi-care. I have read much about it both on this forum and not and have heard great things about it! I have also heard use of acetone on coins for removing stuff like this, but haven't experimented with it either.

Anyway, I was just looking for any suggestions, tips, what to do/not to do, and any other thoughts you might have.

(PS - Hoping this is the right area of the forum for this, still pretty new to this amazing place)

Thank you in advance!!
-Ty

If I have a coin that needs some extra attention, I always start with a pure acetone soak. I usually leave them in for at least 24 hours (the duration won't do any harm). That fits my schedule better than, say, a couple hours.

For verdigris, I will use Verdi-Care if the coin is worth saving. For expiremental purposes, use coins that aren't worth saving first to learn the process. When you buy Verdi-Care, it comes with clear instructions for use depending on the condition of the coin. I simply follow the instructions. For me, the most important part of using it is removing the excess thoroughly so your coin doesn't look lacquered. Also, letting it dry for at least 24 hours before holdering is important.

Is using acetone considered "cleaning" and will TPG's note that as such on the holder?

No, not unless the acetone rinse reveals something.

For example, you have a nice tone/patina a coin but an area was protected by organic crud. Acetone removes the crud and reveals a well protected area that now stands out in contrast to the toned areas.
