In May 1941, the United States Treasury introduced the new Series E bonds as Defense Savings Bonds. After the American entry into WWII the title of the bonds was changed to War Savings Bonds.

Series E Defense Bonds were issued in denominations of $25.00, $50.00, $100.00, $500.00 and $1,000.00.

The first Defense Bonds printed by the BEP were given the nomenclature of New Design. This carried forward the BEP nomenclature from Series D bonds. The New Design type of Defense Bond.

The identifying characteristic of the New Design type Defense Bond is the perforations where the bond was held in place in the bond booklet are at the top.

Here is an example of the New Design type $25.00 Defense Bond.

And a close up of the top perforations.

The frame is also a slightly different size compared to the later type. The serial number range for the New Design type of $25.00 Defense Bond is from 1-4,595,000 (approx.).

The second type of Series E Defense Bond is identified by the BEP nomenclature as Series 1941. Aside from the slightly different size of the frame, the perforations are on the left side of the bond.

Here is a Series 1941 $25.00 Defense Bond. The left perforations are clearly seen on this example.

There are two different varieties of the Series 1941 Defense Bond and the difference is found in the window on the upper right side of the bond.

One type like the one above has a solid black line between the text (MONTH) (YEAR) and DUE 10 YEARS.

The other type this line is made up of three separate lines as shown here.

In the first image all of the text within the window is printed by offset printing. In the second image all of the text in the window is part of the intaglio plate.

I'm surprised these stay on the market with their ties to WWII. There are so many collectors of that genre and items like this that would fit in a lot of collections.

I was hoping lettow would show up eventually and post something interesting! I don't collect these type of bonds but I do admire all the products of the Bureau of Engraving & Printing.

Fyi, the BEP just posted (low-res) images for their upcoming intaglio print program and one of them features a partial reprint of a $10,000 WWI War Bond.

Here's a better image of the souvenir card that just arrived last week. I wish the BEP had chosen to show more of the Liberty Bond.
