New to all this, but was wondering if there's anything special about a 1979 penny with a filled in D?

Just a partial broken post. The highest point is the lower part of a coin. So the tip if the post had broken off your coin. So there is nothing special with your coin. Hundreds of thousands of coin were struck with the same die, and it probably kept breaking off making the inside part of the 'D' more filled in as time went on.

to the forum!

For some year's cents, I struggle to find one without the mint mark filled.
Rest in Peace
