SMS were sets established only for the years 1965-67. A 64 cent would be a business strike or a Proof coin from Philly mint. The SMS coins were produced at all mints, just w/o a D or S mark

There are markers on the reverse side of the 1964 EXPERIMENTAL special mint set coins.
These went undiscovered until 1993.

1964 Experimental SMS Cent

These coins weren't discovered until around 1993-1994.

We don't know for sure why these coins were minted but it was most likely the result of the mint's search for an alternative to the proof cents that were not minted from 1965 through 1967. These coins show greater details and sharper strikes than the business strikes of the same year, yet do not have the reflective shine of the proof cents. No one knows for sure how many of these experimental coins were minted, but it is estimated that the number is less than 50. Even though it is believed that the mintage number is very low for these special cents, there are most likely more to be discovered.

What are those markers on the 64 SMS? Don't know how many I've dumped over the years.

These will all be VEDS coins with less than 100 struck. I would guess it would be a waste of time checking for these. They were just put into special sets that probably only mint employees had a chance to get. (Just my speculation) All examples in the earliest die states.

I really, really, really, truly, honestly, imperatively, sussinctly (enough emphasis?), believe that information should be highlighted, and underscored on any reference to this variety and other similar situation variety coins being taunted throughout the "Cherry-pickin'" phenonmenon of today! Including any reference sources as well. Yes, I know it generates an "interest" in searching coinage for these errors only because of the promise of easily attained riches. That is what I disagree with. This emphasis may generate 1 out of 2000 becoming genuinely interested in the study and lifelong searching of coins. Most often there are 1999 disappointed, angry individuals who will never become a coin collector. Check the new posting rolls on CCF to verify.

End of tonite's rant, more tomorrow I'm sure.

How many 1943 Copper cents are known to exist? How about 1944 Steel cents, 1958 Doubled dies, and other extremely rare coins? Should people not be aware of these just because the chances of finding one are so slim?

The 1964 SMS were a test for the 1965-67 SMSs. They didn't strike proof coins those years. So it's not the color of a coin that makes it a proof or SMS. It is the strike of the planchets, the number of strikes to make them a proof/SMS. The die strike numbers and the amount of coins struck with these dies (cents 3,000 coin limit. 6,000 strikes) that makes them a proof. A Business strike coin is not a proof/SMS. The process is different.

Note the differences on each of these strikes?

One comment, in the third from the bottom image posted by Coop of the reverse of the SMS cent, he points out a marker at the base of the second bay, and lathe lines in the fourth bay (there are also lathe lines in the steps). These markers have also shown up on business strikes. Apparently they used at least the reverse die for business strikes after they finished using it for the SMS pieces.
