I know (very) little about silver, but was hoping the marks that look like lions make this sterling. I think the lower three marks are the actual maker marks of George B Sharp. Thanks. Hopefully this is the best forum for the question. Mod please move if not.

There are reference books that show the various maker's marks.
Perhaps at your local library.

I'm not an expert, but I would be very surprised if this wasn't silver. What is kind of strange to me is that the lion passant is the British mark for sterling silver, but George Sharp and Bailey and Co. were American, based in Philadelphia. The website http://www.925-1000.com says he was an important maker, so it may be a valuable piece.

I thnk you are good to think this is sterling. After Sharp left Bailey and Co (and they discontinued their own silver manufacture) they still ordered silver products from him.

The marks on yours item look like these.

Thanks for the replies. I did a little more research, and this might be coin silver which is .900. Yes the British sterling mark is a lion, but this piece is from around 1850, when the US standard was coin silver, and didn't change to sterling until around 1880. So right now I'm leaning toward coin silver because the piece doesn't say .925 or STERLING which are the US marks. Still researching.....
Rest in Peace

A beautiful piece, from that photo, that may be worth far more than silver value alone.
