As most of us know, 2009 nickels (and dimes) are difficult to locate in circulation for the vast majority of the country. The 2009-P nickels are particularly hard to find pretty much everywhere other than Puerto Rico - one of their few release points. I've also read on this forum of people in Southwestern Florida having some luck in finding them. From what I gather, the 2009-D nickels seem to have mostly been released in the West part of the country. Going through a few older posts here, I've seen that people in Southern California (Santa Barbara to San Diego) and Las Vegas don't have too much trouble finding them, while others have more difficulty. I'm one of the fortunate ones who lives in Southern California, so I have been able to find a good number (1,250 or so) of 2009-D nickels (I find about 3 per box), but only 60 2009-Ps in over 860,000 coins searched. I haven't studied the dimes in depth yet, but I've personally only found 11 total 2009 coins (3 Ps, 8 Ds) in the past 10,500 searched. I was curious as to others and their stories of 2009 dimes and nickels, and how often they find them in their part of the country. CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Great post. I have a bit of data and one anecdote!
Data: In 2016, I did 115 boxes of nickels and found 52 2009-D and 29 2009-P nickels. Central Ohio region. I'll update my 2017 results when I finish my tallying. Anecdote: A family member returning from Puerto Rico brought back 2 2009-D nickels in change from the trip. He didn't collect coins; the two nickels just happened to in his change from the trip and I told him they were not common.

Thanks, aristarchus! You're in that part of the country that didn't get either of them released in much quantity. I'm guessing your 2017 data will be similar to your 2016 data on them.
Yup... Puerto Rico is the place to find those 2009-Ps, apparently.

Sorry for the typo; yes the Puerto Rico coins were 2009-P. In 2017, I found 10 2009-P and 35 2009-D Jefferson nickels in rolls. I will post all of the totals in the nickel thread in the next day or so.

Must not have reached Montana, I just finished sorting out all my 2000's nickels and I figured I'd find at least one. Nope not a single 2009 in the whole bag.

I live in central Missouri. With regularity I will find one, sometimes two 2009D per box. I have found 3 2009Ps since beginning to look through nickels in 2015, that's approximately 48k searched. I got over the OCD to keep track a year ago!

Sounds like you got the 2009-Ds nickels out there, but not as much in quantity as I did. I'm finding about 1 2009-P nickel every 14,500 or so coins - a similar ratio to you.

South Florida. I found the P's in 2009 for the nickel and dime, I come across a few still but not in good shape really. I still haven't come across a 2009 D of either denom but it's been a good couple years since I searched dimes or nickels more than a dozen rolls or so at a time.
I'm usually searching quarters and pennies, Sometimes to get some rolls of others here or there.
anyways my point was the Ps were easy enough in South Florida in 2009. back then I wasn't searching boxes, was searching like $50 a week in mixed rolls and working at a restaurant and got a couple rolls of each of the cents and the dimes and nickels, I don't have them now though, I fell on hard times in 2011 and liquidated the rolls I was holding for cash.. and my silver hoard I had been saving since the 1980s.

Thanks for the information on that, Big-Kingdom. I'm not sure if it was you I spoke to a couple of years ago about this or not. Sorry you fell on some hard times in 2011. Have had to liquidate some of my coins and rolls the past several months as well, but things are looking up.

I haven't found one in the wild yet either. All 2009 nickels or just the Philly nickels? Any idea how many coins you've been through? Being out in Maine, it doesn't surprise me that you're not having much luck.
