Recently I acquired 28 Buffalo nickels that I will be posting for grading. Hopefully we can learn together about grading these.

This is the key date. Doesn't seem to have a date but will see if there was a way that the seller was able to ascertain the date.

Picked this up for $56. Thoughts about grade and problems? Thanks!

My buffalo herd arrived today and I will be photographing these and posting pics in hand.

The first one that I wanted to look up was the key date 1913-S Type 2 nickel that appeared to have no date. I contacted the seller and he indicated that the date was legible if the coin was held at an angle. I examined the coin carefully and I was extremely excited to find that he was right. The coin has a legible date under a 5x loupe when viewed at an angle! In addition, there is no indication that the coin was acid dated.

I have taken some pictures. It was difficult to capture the date in pics, but I think I captured enough detail in the enhanced pic to identify the date. Let me know if you see any issues or concerns.

First, the coin pics in general:

1913-S-T2-Buffalo-Nickel
1913-S-T2-Buffalo-Nickel

In the enhanced picture below I can the 3 in the date clearly. I can also see the tops of the first 1 and 9 in the date. It is important that the top of the 9 is visible because in the 1913 buff, the 9 and 3 in the date are very close together because the 1 between those two numbers is very thin. for the 1923, 1933 and 1943 buffaloes, the 9 and 3 are significantly further apart. In hand the 913 are visible and about half the first 1 can be discerned.

Pretty excited, but the seller expressed that he would refund the cost of the coin and the return shipping if I didn't like it, so I felt very comfortable with this purchase. Thanks for your continued help!

This is AG-03 if even that. If you're happy with it that's what counts.

I just realized that there is no 1932, 1933 and 1943 Buffalo nickel, so the only other date this coin could be is the 1923s. Oops.

Prior reasoning still applies.

We know you know your stuff, so I think a bunch of us just don't understand why you would want to own something like this.

That's a fair question. This is the only key date for this coin series, other than the errors and overdates. An ag3 example sells for $120 or more. So buying it for $56 makes sense to me. Other than the difficult to discern date, I like the coin a lot. It is worn but it is worn evenly.

The group I bought this week is made up mostly of branch mint coins from the teens and twenties which are scarce in problem free condition with eye appeal. I am excited to have been able to acquire them at reasonable prices.

In terms of my reasoning in collecting, I just buy what I like.
