Professional Coin Grading Variability

frank wasson New Member Australia 49 Posts	Posted 01/13/2018 12:55 am I was, merely out of interest, looking at this ebay listed Netherlands coin https://www.ebay.com/itm/1795-Nethe....m1438.l2649 which has a PCGS grading of MS-63 and comparing it against these comparatively graded coins https://www.ebay.com/itm/Netherland....m1438.l2649 and https://www.ebay.com/itm/1793-Nethe...m1438.l2649. There's clearly a big difference in quality. The first coin appears to be more on par with https://www.ebay.com/itm/1794-NETHE...m1438.l2649. What are the Coin Community's thoughts about this and how does one reconcile the differences in grading? It's intriguing how these grading companies actually grade coins, and at the same time worrying about the variability of the grading. * Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. * Report this Post to the Staff

The 1795 graded MS63 is way overgraded, I thought it's a lower grade than the 1794 graded XF until I looked at the PCGS certification page, that has a much better image, clearly worth an AU. However, that's the trouble with other people's grading; you don't often get the chance to question them. Without a date of grading, you can't tell whether that was a recent over-grading or a long time ago, one of the best the grader had ever seen. I think that the general answer is that there is variability between the "good" grading companies, and even within. My own opinion is that the grading companies in the US, which seems to be most of them, have better consistency with US coins. Report this Post to the Staff

You're attempting to definitively grade off of pictures which were taken by two different people with two different styles. The luster is their on the first coin, the TruViews don't emphasize it in their style such as the person tried to do with the NGC coin. But you can see it in the fields ect especially if you've seen a lot of those pictures before and how they apply to coins in hand. If you switched those two coins and had them photographed with the other style of picture of you would have very similar results with people asking why the NGC one has muted luster.
