All 68s I have found have the crazy 8 and the letters are tucked on or under the rim I had one that was in the rim so far half the letters were gone

Looks like a hit has flattened the rim into the letter L.

Well the real reason is:
The Master Hub was wearing out and making the devices touch the rim area for use for so long.
1968-D-LMC-Okay,-Who's-Been-Welding-The-L-To-The-Rim?
Note where the master hub is. It is the one that they added the digits last digits to each year to create the master dies, (2), then the working hubs, then the working dies. So in 1969 they created a new master hub with a bit smaller design. Thus you will note, that when you look at the 1969 cents.
So when you look at 1968 cents they all look like that from master hub spreading outwards all those years it was used.
