This is a coin from ebay. It has an odd looking counter stamp. I was wondering if anyone has ever seen one like it.

I can't quite make out the image depicted on the counter stamp but this link might be relevant http://www.coinbooks.org/esylum_v14n29a14.html

Anyone that knows my collecting preferences might recognize this type coin from another thread. I am the buyer and did so because I want to check something in addition to the odd chop mark that looks like a bird? over four I's or 7's.

I do not think the chop is Chinese. Looks like one of the eagles from a German State or possibly eastern Europe. I agree it is not really clear in the sellers pictures.

I will try to get a micro-photograph when the coin arrives.

As a clue yo my earlier questions, look at the shield and at the test cuts on the King' head. Notice anything odd?

I don't recognize the counterstamp but the coin looks like silver plating has worn off after a fair amount of circulation.

I note the unusual shape of the left window in the castle on the reverse.

jgenn Yes, exactly. That is an early version of the keyhole porthole window type struck before the right window was fully eroded into a circle. As I have said before I believe the issue was a contemporary counterfeit using various debased planchets. It is a variety that is very well represented in TPG holders.

I am hoping that finding the origin of the c/s might shed some more information on when and where this variety came from.

It a Chinese relief chop. The character is #30410; meaning 'beneficial'. (see: https://translate.google.com.tw/?hl...en/%E7%9B%8A )

chopmark

Thank you for the suggestion. If the punch (chop) was multi-struck (actually twisted) it could be the answer.

Are you aware when this type of relief chop was first used? I suspect the coin was actually produced well after 1789 - as late as 1840. Were these rectangular relief chops used before that date?

Actually, I have no idea when this chop was in use. Few hard facts are known about chops (when and where they were made and by who) so it could have been any time. Also, the character isn't #30410 as stated in my previous post. That number is just on assigned by this forum's software as it doesn't appear to support Chinese characters (I originally wrote the Chinese character but it was changed into that number). Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Chops are a focus of mine but there is little actually known about the individual chops.

I was hopeful that there was more factual information on the History of chops than was found in Rose's small book. It seem that no progress has been made since Chops were first mentioned in an article in the French Numismatic Society Bulletin of 1906.

I was able to find the shape of the Chop using the Google translator for the word benefit. This is the figure I found I hope it is correct for what you were referring to.

There is a similarity but it is not exact.

I have not yet received the coin to make a comparison.
