Hello, can you please grade my 1889 3 pence pls. I'm trying to get additional information about the coins I have from the UK but don't know which online source is reliable. Thanks again for any information provided.

By American standards, I think there's enough detail left in the Victoria portrait to claw its way in the VG range, maybe even gets to F12 if the grader happened to feel very generous (or hungover).

I agree. Not quite VG. I recommend the Standard Guide to Grading British Coins by D F Allen.

I have the above reference. Comparing this coin with photos on p76 and p220, this coin is less than 'fair'.

UK 'fair' = US 'good', rating as 4 on the Sheldon scale. ( ref p9 same source ).

Sorry, but using that book as a guide, I would only rate this as UK poor.

I can understand were your coming from. However I use FAIR as being the lowest grade possible GOOD then VERY GOOD.

Not that it matters as long as the poster gets the general idea.

The reference mentioned above I've found useful and would recommend for anyone getting into British Predecimal. Poor for me.
