Hi Everyone. New to the Forum. Have a question about date position on 1867 Three Cent coin.
Was looking for a Three Cent piece to buy and found several 1867 pieces with different date position. Are there so many varieties?

The dates were punched into the individual dies by hand so their position varies. Then you have to consider that the mint was not good at working with the unusually hard coppernickel alloy and it cause very rapid failure of the dies. So there were a LOT of dies, probably between 40 and 80 or more die pairs.

This series is known for goofy date punching.

Interesting, thank you for complete explanation Conder101.
Is the whole Three Cent series so? Or it's just some early years releases?

Gifford estimates 78 obverse working dies. The early dates of the series has the most issues especially die clashing and date issues.
Rest in Peace

There are very few collectors of such differing positions, so there is almost no additional value.

Of course the late issues had such small mintages that a low fewer dies were needed.
