Hi Everyone. New to the Forum. Have a question about date position on 1867 Three Cent coin. Was looking for a Three Cent piece to buy and found several 1867 pieces with different date position. Are there so many varieties?
The dates were punched into the individual dies by hand so their position varies. Then you have to consider that the mint was not good at working with the unusually hard coppernickel alloy and it cause very rapid failure of the dies. So there were a LOT of dies, probably between 40 and 80 or more die pairs.
