Hey guys. I just wanted some opinions on this bust half. I haven't puchased it, but am considering it if the price stays low. As you know, I am drawn to toned coins, which this one is really strong on. Plus I need a reeded edge for my minimum VF type set. SO questions. What would this one grade? Does it look in any way "doctored" or "damaged"? thanks

the wear looks very uneven on the reverse, the shield looks AU+ quality even, if there's any 'doctoring' it's that they 'etched' it to look newer around there. but other than that I can't tell, nice coin though

good point sc. I didn't notice that. The thing I'm a little concerned about is the contrast of the devices to the fields around the edge. It's very extreme, as the devices look almost "pasty white", where as the edges get very dark. I know there is a contrast in natural toning, but in this case it almost looks like the central area of the coin was cleaned with something.

It actually doesn't look too unnatural, does it look less contrasting in real life?

I don't have the coin in hand. I could be way out in left field, but it just looks a bit funny to me. With all the cleaned/doctored stuff going around, I've become quite a critic. :-P

There is just something about this coin I do not care for, and I can't quite put my finger on it. The central area is still white because the coin most likely suffered an old time cleaning and is starting to retone. There are nicer pieces out there........have you tried jjteaparty?

I like jjteaparty as well but my only complaint is that they moved away from alot of raw coins to alot of slabbed(mainly PCGS) coins which seems to have caused a bit of a price bump. However, the quality is definitely high and they are easy to deal with.

I would buy it if the price is right. Especially if you prefer toned pieces. I too am building such a type set. I prefer to see the coins I buy in person and get most at shows and 1837s dont show up that often in the VF area. I'd call this a VF from what I can tell from the pic. Fair jump in price to XF then AU.

The light old cleaning and the rim ding on the obverse probably bodybagged this one, but if the price was right, I'd buy it.

yeah. the more I look at it, the more I like it. That strong contrast has appeal....and I am emphasizing toned coins in my typeset...So I think it will fit in fine.

ok. update. I received the coin today, and was very pleased with this one! I;ve been examining it closely for the last 15 min. The details on the coin are much stronger in real life than in the picture. It has a full clasp and strong details throughout(much of which aren't noticable in the pic). I don't think it would make XF, but I'd say VF-35. Also there is no rim ding on the obverse. There aren't any of the typical "hairlines" that cleaned coins have, but I do believe that this one was overdipped at one time and has retoned. The devices are very light(too white IMO to be fully natural)and there is absolutely no cartwheel luster. However, I expected this upon purchasing, and I do believe I got more than my money's worth. Oh, and the toning is GORGEOUS!! She fits beautifully in my Dansco 70/70!
PS: sorry I get so excited. It's just nice to find winners after a series of losers. :-P

I don't particularly care for the toning on that piece. The toning pattern makes me think that it was probably cleaned some time ago and placed in an album to retone. Also, I find the pockmarks on the reverse near the eagle kind of annoying. However, pictures can be deceiving and if you like the coin that's all that matters.
