1st Question: Is this date considered a Key or Semi Key? My 2001 price guide is obviously out of date, but this coin had a small premium to the others back then.

2nd Question: Should I have this coin Slabbed/Authenticated if I wanted to sell it in the future?

3rd question: This coin was stored in a plastic container with a foam insert. The Foam insert has completely disinigrated and the coin has toned very dark because of it. How do TPG's handle toned coins and would this be considered damaged - like PVC problems due to the foam? Feel free to throw me a grade with the wicked toning.

Thanks for any answers...

I would consider this a Semi-Key date, but that is just my opinion, I am not 100% certain what distinguishes between the two. It does carry a higher premium, but the value as of the 2006 RedBook in MS 65 puts the value at $3,500.00, which is only a mid range value, I would expect a higher value for a Key date.

However, this coin starts at $150 in VF 20, which in my opinion would justify having it graded, so yes I would recommend that. I am not certain how the TPG's will react to the toning issues, hopefully someone with more experience can give you some advice there, I usually don't send my coins in for grading, I haven't gotten to the point where I want to sell any of my good ones.

If it is determined by the TPG to be "natural" rather than artificial, there should be no conflicts to about MS-63, where eye appeal seems to play an increasing part of grading. When you read the PCGS grading book, they have paragraphs on the various types of "pretty" toning or "positive" toning as compared to obscuring or deep increasing blackish toning or "negative" toning. The extreme depth of toning will either not be graded due to inability to clearly see the surface of the coin, or will be labeled "environmental damage" If in doubt, use ANACs or ICG who will slab problem coins with explanation.
