Hello,

I try to find how detect a paper fibres broken. I bought a note in AU grade, but I detected a vertical fold. The note seems to have been pressed, since it is straight like an iron bar. I tried to take pictures, but it does not stand out as in real life. What I noticed, the upper part of the note seems to have had a pretty strong fold.

I tried to find pictures on the internet, but I did not find.

A zoom on the first picture, the fold is in zigzag.

Do you think the fiber is broken?

Don't know if fibers are broken, would have to have a good linen tester in hand. I circled the fold as I can see which does indicate surface level distortion and separation of paper fibers on the surface, unknown how deep. AU means ALMOST uncirculated , it is graded as having been circulated some, not a completely uncirculated bill.

Probably that's why you have an AU grade.

Nice looking shinplaster.
AU grade allows for one light centrefold.
Make sure you put it in a protective holder.

Great looking note but It sure would help to see the back of the note also.

Take you for your welcome!

I make many searches on the internet, I understand Canada and USA don't have the same grading system. Canadian grading is more technical from my reading.

BCS grading service say for AU "This is the first appearance of a sign of wear. The note can have two to three minor folds (not extending the length of the note) or one light centre fold (without paper fibres broken) but no combination of the two. The note is still crisp and clean with still bright colours."

That's why I'm trying to find out if it's broken fibers or not.

Don't think that will matter really. The grade will never be higher than AU, it's an almost. Unbroken fibers won't change the grade. As suggested put it in a safe holder and quit fingering it.

Very nice shinplaster note, better than any I currently have. When a crease, however light, or a fold shows up in paper money, the fibres of the paper are indeed altered or broken to some extent.Once altered, they will never go back to the original state. So you are correct in thinking the fibres are broken.
