1. Were any put into circulation?

2. Were they hoarded or saved?

3. How often is this date faked? (Reason I ask is that I don't see a lot of people complaining about fakes on ebay.)

1856 FE's were pattern coins with a mintage of 2000 - they were given to government officials - who knows if any of those people actually put them into circulation?

If they didn't make it into circulation, they were certainly kept as pocket pieces...

PCGS's census has 1 AG3, 1 G4, 3 G6, 8 VG8, etc...

The survival estimate (usual disclaimer about how subjective and questionable these are) is 550 all grades and 225 MS, leaving 375 in circulated grades...

Might explain why no roll searchers have found a roll of them.
Rest in Peace

There are fakes of the pattern issues dated 1855-56. But they do not look like the actual "circulation" issues of 56.

A fair percentage have been in circulation or as a pocket piece.

1. Not officially but I'm sure some managed to get into circulation.

2. Yes for the most part they were saved because they were something special, and later some collectors did build hoards of the them. One hoard had over 500 coins and another one had over 700. Those two hoards did not overlap so I'm sure some of the coins from one hoard were also in the other one.

3. Due to their fame and high value the 1856 FE is frequently faked either as an outright counterfeit, or by altering the date on an 1858. In the past ten to fifteen years the Chinese counterfeiters have made a lot of them.
