John1, how can you tell it's a capped die? when I looked at it I thought it was a grease strike-through or similar.

It is Struck Through a Capped Die. Take a look at this link and it will explain what causes it and the different stages of this error. http://www.error-ref.com/struck_thr...age_die_cap/

E&V gave ya the site and page LOOK at it. You'll see the different stages and learn how they're formed. your's is a very late stage where the cap coin has been pounded so thin the original image of the hammer die it's hooked to is showing thru.

Struck through a late-stage die cap. In other words, a generic capped die strike.
