This "S" MM looks rotated but also the top appears to be closed.
Couldn't find anything in reference links or books.
No sign of an impact.

It looks like it took a bit of an impact on the back of the upper loop. The picture is a bit grainy, but you may want to compare your coin to 1948-S RPM-004. The reverse diagnostic for this coin is DDR-002. The tilt on the MM looks to be in the correct location. Might also be 1948-S RPM-001.

Thanks Rackster...I don't have a reference for nickels (except CPG)
I didn't see a DDR-002 on VV...
Here is the MM from VV type 2, there was also a type 4 (sans serif) used for '48...
I normally hunt Lincoln's can you provide me a good link or two for Jeff's?

Here's a link to the DDR listing. Note the position and design for the MM. How does this compare to your coin in hand? I'll look for the RPM reference for you.

Have a look again...the link is there now.

The 1954 D looks like it's a fold over of rim foil.

You may be able to attribute your 1948S with the links I sent...or perhaps eliminate it as a variety specimen. Good luck on the hunt!

Thanks Rackster...it looks to me that you were right on the money on the RPM-004...
The tilt slightly backwards, the thickness of the lines, the way it connects the top loop..

Maybe another variety enthusiast can confirm the attribution. Although your specimen is circulated, you may be able to confirm a marker or two.

Nice to put an identity to something from circulation. Not always possible, but when you can, a moment of triumph!
