( Sorry, but I cannot access the reverse image at the moment - it comes up in the description section of their listing when using the phone, but not the desktop.) With all of the devices matching an authentic coin what is the thinking on the luster? That is, could not a genuine EF Details (Cleaning) be made to look pretty much like this? Thanks for any opinions.

Wish I could but I do not have access to larger/ more detailed images. I can only say it is newly listed on ebay if anyone would like to find it.

Quote: With all of the devices matching an authentic coin what is the thinking on the luster? Everything doesn't match perfectly or have the right look which is why it was pointed out as fake. It's a better than average one but it's still off

Could be, but if that's the only pic that's being used for judging, I'm skeptical of the conclusion.

Picture is too small for an opinion. If I had to guess, I will say the coin is not a fake.

Hi basebal21 - have seen you on CT, too. Could you please be a little more specific on what doesn't match? I had the same first impression but cannot find metrics that differ. I really want to know how this could not be an EF Details (Cleaning). On CT the main man VKB offered helpful links but declined to discuss any detail about my questions.

"Picture is too small for an opinion" I cannot get an answer about if I am allowed to post the ebay item # here. I tried to start a new topic "Is ebay Selling Counterfeit SLQ 25C?" and was going to use this as an example, but the post was immediately nuked. Maybe its a legal thing.

This coin looks a bit off at first glance. The dentils around the edge of the coin and "liberty" on the obverse are not sharp. Overall looks a bit mushy and missing some detail you would expect on a high grade coin IMO.

I checked out the ebay listing, which has better pics. The main red flag is the mushy devices - too few details for such a high grade coin. Look at LIBERTY on the shield as an example. It's barely readable.

I am no expert, but the Liberty in the shield looks off. I would beware. Seeing as the seller is quite experienced, but possibly less familiar with US coinage, I would assume no ill intent....

[ can someone share how to quote the previous message ?]
"I assume you are referring to this listing?"
Yep you got it.
"This coin looks a bit off at first glance. The dentils around the edge of the coin and "liberty" on the obverse are not sharp. Overall looks a bit mushy and missing some detail you would expect on a high grade coin IMO."
The LIBERTY definitely has something wrong. The confusing thing is that 'BER' was polished out of the die on this Obverse 5 (Briggs). It is almost as if there was an attempt to mimic that and they messed up more than they meant to. The position of the '1' in the date matches the Obverse 5 diagnostic. The dentils do look sharp in the original listing photo. So the mushiness would result from post-strike 'processing'. where they induce variability into the pieces from the counterfeit run.
