It appears most of the dmaage came from the rim in...
Makes me think during the minting process HAL9000 went crazy on this coin...

SF11Dude, I'm gonna have to go with PMD! That's not mint damage. That's someone with no respect for Abe. Some one beat the heck outta' that poor cent or it got caught up in some sort of machinery after it left the mint

It looks like human damage to me. Also, the gouges probably started on the interior and were made moving outward to the rim. I agree with Spence, it has been vandalized.
