TPG's are much better at grading than authenticating -- after all they only look at the coin for a few minutes. Their guarantee is of value but it won't protect your full investment if you overpaid so you need to research the price range for recent auctions. Heritage Auctions has past auction archives -- study the prices and build a collection of certified coin photographs for future comparison.
I agree that buying NGC or PCGS (possibly ANACS) certified coins is safer. If you want to buy raw, make sure you check the older posts in this forum for Straits Settlement coins that have been looked at for authenticity questions.
