Dear Sirs or Ma'ams:

I would like to know which is correct direction for 1983 UK £1 coin's inscribed words supposed to be?

I have two 1983 £1 coins but both have different directions for its own inscribed words on their edge? In my case, one edge shows the inscribed letters being (arrow up) and other edge shows letters being (arrow down).

I am wondering that one of the coins might be counterfeit?

I welcome your expertise on this pound coin.

Thank you for your help in advance!

Either way up is normal. The edge inscription is added to the blanks before the coin is pressed. When the coin is minted it will randomly sit either way up in the press. Same for the £2 coin.

@Anaximander,
Thank you for answering my enquiry! I am relieved that I do not have a counterfeit pound coin after all. I thought I got my first fake pound coin.

Thank you for educating me about how the round pound coin was minted.

Appreciate your taking time to reply to my query.

Either or both of your coins could still be fake. Official estimates were around 3% of round pound coins in circulation being fake. Unofficial estimates have put it around 5% or more.

It won't be the orientation of the edge lettering which indicates whether or not a coin is fake, but more likely the ( poor ) quality of the lettering.

Post pictures of your coins, both reverse and obverse, and also some pictures of the edge lettering.

Also, on the photos of the reverses, place marks showing where the top of the queens head is on the obverse. Sometimes on fake pounds, the obverse and reverse are not aligned.

Anaximander, thank you for your concern about my round pound coins. I assure you they are not fake. I do know about these pointers. I did not notice that the edge lettering's orientation can be different due to the mint process which you so kindly informed me.

Again, appreciate your help on the issue of orientation of the edge lettering!
