Hello, I am new to the community and very happy to be here. I have always loved coins but only just recently started to actively pursue this passion. Just today I found this 1988 D penny with a doubled D by the date. Anyone know what a coin like this might be worth? Thanks

I'm thinking that the zinc is rotting under the copper plating, not a D/D RPM.

To CCF! Unfortunately, it is just Zinc Rot. PMD (Post Mint Damage) and it isn't an error. Worth face value.

You will see that sort of damage quite a bit around the date and mintmark. It is caused when the copper plating is split during the strike and that happens in the direction of the rim. The exposed zinc will start to corrode and eventually, the whole coin will be consumed. Nasty stuff!

Other damage can also pierce the plating to expose the zinc and you get the same result.

Looking forward to your posts!
