I have been looking for an 1876 20 cent piece for my type set of circulation strike 20 cent pieces, but I find that most are out of my budget. ($500 - 1,000) When I look at price guides, however, I see that in about G-4 condition, it can be obtained for under $300. But I can't find anyone offering one for sale for that price. Is my only option to go to local coin dealers, or can someone show me a listing for one at an affordable price?

Thanks.

A quick look at the PCGS populations suggest that those are next to non-existant in lower grades, at least for slabbed pieces. PCGS records a population of 1 in Poor-1 and 1 in VG-8, with none in between. It appears the vast majority of slabbed 1876 20 Cent pieces are in higher grades, VF and above, which you should be able to find for around 500 dollars or so.

This is an uncommon coin. It may take you years to find one in good condition in your price range especially without problems. I think PCGS has a population of 0 in good condition.

Interestingly, Gerry Fortin has one in VF-30 right now under $500. More than your budget probably but again this is a very scarce coin and probably the best you can do with decent detail, originality for the price. I'd snatch it up if it's a date you're interested in.

When you compare the price and availability of CC 20¢ pieces to the 1876 P there is absolutely no comparison to the scarcity and for about the same price. Very underrated coin!

Thanks for the help! I will take a look at it. My original budget was about $350 but considering the rarity of this date I may have to spend a little more to get a nice problem-free example. VF-30 for $500 sounds pretty good and I may be able to get it.
