I was reading up on the WL half dollar and it seems the 1938-D is one of the more popular coins in the series. It has a fairly low mintage and a decent amount were held back from circulation. When I look at these coins online though, it seems like almost all of them have a very weak strike on the eagle's leg on the reverse. Even MS65 and 66 examples appear to be weakly struck. Are the pictures just bad or is it true that the 1938-D had strike quality issues?
All Walkers, of any date, are very scarce with full center strikes.
The upper thigh of the eagle on the reverse and the thumb and hand holding the bouquet on the obverse are the toughest areas to find with anything resembling full strike.
Strike counts for eye appeal and value, but not for numeric technical grade.
I've seen proof walkers that don't have Full strikes on the hand and skirt etc. just the way they are. Flat hands are especially weak in 1940s San Francisco issues
Thanks for the info, good to know. I figured they were like many other series where only some years were lightly struck. It's definitely a series I could see collecting if it was more affordable. I'm not a fan of worn down coins and to put together an AU/BU set would cost way more money than I have!
According to Bowers and the Whitman Guide, the 38 D is a weak strike with the best coins showing about 60% of the left hand details and about 50% of the feathers on the eagle's left leg. Not as bad as some pre1933s but not so great either.......
