Just received this today. Think of the history that could be behind this. It was holed to be used as a cape button. Many times the wives would make the heavy wool cloaks for their husbands or sons as they went off to fight the war. In this case the Civil War. Just think of a baby born in 1826, in 1861 at 24 is off to war, with a constant reminder of a loved one waiting at home. Just what did Miss Liberty see in her travels on a host coat?

That's a nice piece of history. Considering what coins have been through in the past is one of my favorite things about collecting. Responses seem pretty lacking tonight. Is there something I should know about?

Quote: It was holed to be used as a cape button That is a very specific claim about the damage of this coin! A woman sewed it to a cloak in the Civil War? Maybe, but is there evidence? Sounds like an expensive way to make buttons.

That is drilled for a button. As to how or for whom it was used is conjecture.

Could also be a humdinger.A simple toy to amuse a child. Take a coin, preferably a larger one and put two holes through it. Put a loop of thin cord through the holes so the loop is a little over a foot or so long. Put a thumb through ether end of the loop and wind up the coin in the center. Pull the ends of the loop apart so the coin unwinds. By moving the thumbs back and forth you can make the coin wind and unwind. Get it going fast enough and it will make a humming sound.
It was a simple inexpensive toy, and when they tired of it you could still spend the coin.

See, imagination folks, it's WHAT IT COULD BE, not what it is! Sheesh!

Neet piece of history. That would make one heck of a button.

Humdinger is a confirmed toy with two or three holes to loop the string through ...
Good point about the button - a 1C was alot of money back then ... when in doubt ... Humdinger is your best bet ... IMO.
