Hi. I have actually already introduced myself, but I have a question and didn't know which forum to post it in.

Being a new member, the rules ask me to refrain from posting links and pictures.

Someone recently asked for some help with translating the dates on Thai coins. I knew of a site that provided exactly the information he/she was seeking. Is there any way I could have told this member about the site without breaking any rules? I ended up posting a list of Google search terms that I thought would bring up the page and luckily it worked.

I also have my own server space where I store pictures of some pieces of my collection. I have questions about these pieces and would love to be able to display the coin with the question, but if I am understanding the under 50 posts rules, I cannot post the picture with my question, nor can I provide a link to the picture that resides on my server.

Is there any approved way of sharing a picture or a web site with other members without breaking any rules? My intentions are good, but a great many of the questions I have are about identification and grading and in these areas the old adage that "a picture is worth 1000 words" was never truer.

I thought I could post web addresses with spaces between the letters so they might not show up as a link but I don't want it to appear that I am trying to beat the system.

I am not trying to short-circuit the rules, I am trying to work within them to effectively share information.

Any help on this? Or do I just continue to post Google search terms hoping that it takes people to the intended URL. I have too much respect for the forum to fabricate 50 meaningless post just to get my wings.

Thanks.

If you have pictures of coins that you need help grading or identifying, then you are certainly encouraged to show them! It is best to include the image inline rather than just the link. Read this Tutorial, especially the section Having an image appear in your post.

We LOVE pictures!

but jbuck is right. It's much better to have the picture in the thread instead of an external link.

We like to ask new members not to post links as there are a Lot of spammers out there so there is a blanket rule in effect.

50 posts happens in no time. Sit back relax indulge and enjoy.

On this forum, links aren't removed automatically, they are removed manually by the moderators. As such, they can be judged on a case-by-case basis. Occasionally a "newbie" with a particularly interesting and relevant link or website will be allowed to post it.

Personally, I think the best thing to do would be to post a link, then immediately report yourself (click on the link in the bottom right corner of your post that says "Send note to staff". Explain, in the little dialogue box that pops up, your reasons for posting the link. The moderators will see that and take appropriate action, either letting it stand or deleting it.

In case the previous respondents haven't made it clear, the 50 post limit only applies to links, not to pictures. We encourage "newbies" to post as many pictures as they like, of coins they own or need identification of or grading help with.

To get pictures to appear directly in posts (rather than as a link), use this format:

Only .jpg and .gif images are supported, I believe.

Good morning dcv. Everyone that has posted is correct. To Sap's point, not ALL links are removed from posts by the staff. Some have very good information, and are only posted to help someone. What some people don't think about, and what gets removed the most, are the links inside of the links. While most intentions are good, and some websites have fantastic information, they also have links to things that are not "family friendly". These links won't always be on the front page either. So, to make things easy, we have a rule in place to limit external links to members that have been around a little bit.

Having said that, your post was very honest, and integrity goes a long way with the staff here. Especially the part about posting sites with spaces to beat the system. Most don't ask....I would request that for the near future, simply use the tutorial jbuck provided. Save your images to your desktop and post from there for now. I believe your intentions are good, and like Grace stated, 50 posts will be here in no time at all.

Oh, and almost forgot my manners, welcome to the forum!!

That would indeed be the best idea.
