I bought this framed 20th century type set at my LCS. I like the look of it and the rainbow toning on some of the coins so I plan to keep the set as is.

Two of the Lincolns and the two Washingtons were put in the wrong holes. And most of the coins need to be straightened out. There is tape on the back holding them in.

I am thinking that I will try acetone before putting them back in. I don't want to damage the board removing the tape. I haven't handled one of these before so if anyone has any experience, advice, or comments I would appreciate it.

My suggestion is dump the aftermarket holder. The cardboards are know for additives in the paper that cause havoc. Take the coins out and after a nice bath and rinse (acetone soak and distilled water rinse) put in flips or 2x2 for the moment. Then research which media you want to present them in, folder, album or mounted plastic holders. There are many forms, eras to chose. The tape HAS TO GO! acetone will remove residue. Those coins that have "toned", leave alone. Any cleaning will devalue the coin. Certain ones like nickels and cents you should just replace, they are most likely ruined beyond conservation.

I have an old Littleton folder I first used fort the 20th Century coins, plus your birth year!, $3 for that, Get a Whitman or Dansco Type set album for 18-21st century coins or do as I do, make your own, and expand upon what's out there. This is how I lay it out on a vinyl page in 2x2s:

Just how far you take it is up to you, just an R & R or upgrade to include other years.

BTW, a Cap Plastic set can be framed easily and looks sharp as a tack! No need for glass either!

These coins appear to be mostly circulated, so an acetone dip sounds like a simple first step. Personally, I would not put them back in that holder - get a new one and get off on the right foot.

to the CCF!

If you can scan the front then insert the scan where the old paper was, that might work. Good luck cutting the circles

Don't. Cardboard in sets like these often contain an additive in the cardboard that ruins the coin.

You can store the coins in PVC free 2 x 2s/flips, or you could always get yourself a Dansco 7070 and start a type set. Whatever you do, don't keep it in the cardboard holder.

Thank you for all the quick replies. It is all very helpful. I think I will get the coins out, use acetone, get the tape off, and see how they look.
