Today, believe it or not, I received a 1960 french 1 franc in change. Trying to find info on it. The only thing I've leaned is that it is a common coin. Other than that that there were large and small date varieties. Doing a quick search on ebay prices ranged from $2.00 to $200.00 ?condition didn't seem to be a factor (none were certified) the one I'm holding appears to be a small date. Any info would be appreciated.

Appreciate your response but that is the first place I checked. I know ebay, being what it is, people can charge anything they want but the discrepancy in price made me believe,in my ignorance, there was something more there.

I'm not exactly clear on what your question is. The current Le Franc shows that coin valued at 0.3E in VG/TB all the way to 450E in MS65/FDC.

Quote: I don't understand the discrepancy in cost on eBay Some people put things on ebay for ridiculous prices - I've seen common British coins (like the 2016 Battle of Hastings 50p) that can easily be found in change, priced at hundreds of pounds. You really need to check completed sales to get an idea of value. The 1960 1 franc was the first year of issue and had a colossal mintage, and there are still lots of them about.

I just got one of these in change. Mine is magnetic, too, therefore made of steel -- and fake, right?

No, the coin is made of nickel and nickel is also magnetic. Your coin is not fake.

Wow, I never knew that! For my own edification, I went to https://terpconnect.umd.edu/~wbresl...agnetic.html: "The element Nickel (Ni) is one of the few ferromagnetic metals. Ferromagnetic means they are attracted to magnets and can be magnetized themselves. Most metals aren't magnetic with the exception of iron, nickel, cobalt, gadolinium, neodymium and samarium." Is there any reason why these 1 Franc coins are showing up recently? It's the same size and color as a U.S. Quarter...
