I'm planning on attending a coin show this weekend. Among the things I'll be looking for are better date Peace dollars, a Seated dollar, and Bust designs (would be my first).

There are a few coins in my type set that I'm considering upgrading (specifically Indian quarter- and half eagles, both MS61). It would help my budget if I could bring those to the show as potential trade-ins, either to upgrade them directly or to offset the cost of a new piece I might purchase.

I know what my pieces are worth but I hate to haggle. I expect that some dealers would be willing to accept a trade-in as partial payment while others may not. Is there a standard protocol, or would I be better off trading/selling mine outside of a show?

I've tried this a few times at a few shows, and have been able to complete two deals along the way. Most of the dealers were happy to look over what I had, but most also valued my coins at whatever they would pay me cash for anyways. I think you would likely get move value by selling them on here or on ebay firstly and taking cash to the show.

If you're talking about generic gold, it can't hurt to take them along.

If you go to a dealer that carries that material as well as what you want, they will be more likely to give you the best price on a trade in.

As long as you have the ability to carry them in with you, you really have nothing to lose for asking.
Rest in Peace

Never did like the practice of trading , whether it's at a coin show or coin shop . I always feel I'm going to get the raw end of the deal . winds up not being worth it at all .
I rather buy what I need outright .

The hard part is finding a dealer that has the coins you are interested in AND is interested in the coins that you are trading in.
You may have to sell to one dealer and then take that money to another to get what new coins you want.
And with "Indian quarter- and half eagles" you may get paid by check which makes things even more difficult.

Is it a big show (>100 dealers)?
If not that could cause you even further problems finding a dealer that will buy your gold.

True, which makes a coin show better than a coin shop. Find the best offers for buy and sell.

Thanks for the comments thus far. A few follow-ups:
* This is not a huge show. There's no statement on how many tables. When I went to the same location two years ago, there were ~40 tables and at least a few of the dealers are reasonably large and local. (I've been to their stores, solely as a buyer.)
* I have limited space for my collection, so it will be to my advantage to sell some as I continue. I have consignment leads, and I have done ebay before, but I'm not looking forward to dealing with transaction fees, shipping problems, and shady buyers. Selling here on CCF is an option -- it's a matter of time and convenience.
* My Indian gold are common dates, and at MS61 they would not command that much of a premium (hence my desire to upgrade).

It makes a lot of sense to attempt dealing at the same table. Selling without buying from the same dealer would not be advantageous to me, and I do have the option of simply holding on to them for now if the price isn't right. Besides, any dealer would probably rather move their own inventory than take in more, especially common MS61s.

Can't hurt to try, and I have other things on my "unload" list that are better suited for listing here anyway.

Sell here, accept pay pal. You and your buyer are protected.

Selling at close to retail with no fees can't be beat.

Don't take payments by check even if you sell to someone different than you buy from. Cash or walk away.

When you say MS 61s are they graded?

I've had very good luck with trades/sales at larger shows like ANA but poor luck at the smaller shows.
