Time to wrap up my look at eagles on classic era US commemorative coins by going back to the Arkansas Statehood Centennial half dollar, but this time bringing to light the Senator Joseph Robinson design type. (You can have a look at the brief post I made about the "regular" variety of the Arkansas half dollar via the link below.)

The two design types of the Arkansas Statehood coins share a common obverse design (Note: The eagle side is officially considered the coin's obverse even though the portrait side is generally viewed as the obverse by collectors and grading services.) The eagle, with outstretched wings, is perched on a radiant sun with a portion of the Arkansas State Flag above and behind it.

Robinson's right-facing portrait dominates the coin's reverse. Robinson was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1902; he served Arkansas in the House for five consecutive terms, serving until January 14, 1913. He was elected Governor of Arkansas in late 1912, and took office on January 16, 1913; he remained in the House until two days before taking office as Governor. He served just 55 days as Governor, however, as the Arkansas legislature voted to return him to Washington, DC as a US Senator to take the seat that opened when recently re-elected Senator Jeff Davis died; though named for him, Senator Davis was no relation to the President of the Confederacy - Jefferson Davis. Robinson served over 24 years in the US Senate, including the last four as Senate Majority Leader; during his tenure, he became one of the Senate's most powerful/influential members. Robinson died in office on July 14, 1937; he is buried in Arkansas.

I previously posted about the eagle featured within the reverse design of the 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial half dollar, but I wanted to circle back for a brief mention of the horses found on the obverse.

The 1925 Stone Mountain half dollar was issued "in commemoration of the commencement on June 18, 1923, of the work of carving on Stone Mountain, in the State of Georgia, a monument to the valor of the soldiers of the South...and in memory of Warren G. Harding, President of the United States of America, in whose administration the work was begun." (Public Law 68-46).

The obverse of the half dollar features General Robert E. Lee and General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson of the Confederate Army. Lee is the forward of the two figures and is captured in a side profile; Jackson is depicted in the rear turned to face Lee (i.e., forward). Both are shown on horseback, moving left, at the front of what the viewer is to imagine is a long procession of Confederate officers and soldiers. This grander scope was originally envisioned for the monument as well as the coin, but each saw reductions in its design objectives due to its own novel constraints. (You can read more about such limitations via the links below.)

Though I haven't seen it referenced specifically, it seems likely that Lee and Jackson are depicted riding their favorite, long-time mounts. For Lee, that would be Traveller, his trusted horse from February 1862 through the end of the Civil War (and beyond!). Stonewall Jackson's mount was Little Sorrel; it was a calm horse that did not frighten easily in battle and provided Jackson with exemplary service throughout Jackson's life (Jackson died from wounds sustained via mistaken friendly fire at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863; he died from complications from pneumonia on May 10, 1863). Jackson acquired Little Sorrel when it was captured from the Union after the Confederate victory at Harper's Ferry in September 1862.

I like how it has a simple "medal" look to it.
