Hello all, Absolute novice here, does anyone have any thoughts on the colour difference between these 2 1938 pennies? I can't find anything on the net about it. All comments gratefully received.

Hello Ob1 and ! Coins are occasionally struck on blanks of the wrong metal, but this penny looks as if it's been plated by someone as a science experiment, or possibly for a piece of jewellery. We would really need larger and clearer photos of both sides. Also, it would be interesting to know what the weight is: a normal bronze pre-decimal penny is one-third of an ounce or about 9.45 grams.

Thanks for the quick reply and for the welcome. On my kitchen scales it's 9g and the copper one is 10. I'd be really surprised if it was played as a home experiment as it's been in a box with around 300 other pennies for at least the past 50 years or so. Can you recommend any other research I can do? I'll work on the pictures....

Do they make noticeably different sounds when you drop them on, say, a table? to the CCF!

The silver coloured sounds higher pitched. Is there any way to test what metals they are?

First off, welcome. As a junk bin junkie, I've seen an awful lot of U.K. pennies and halfpennies altered in all sorts of ways - polished, burnished, engraved, stamped, and, yes, plated. If you invest in a digital jewelry scale (often selling for less than £10 on ebay) I think you'll find the disparity in weight between the two coins isn't a full gram.
Colligo ergo sum

Most of these are plated is it magnetic ?. The cuni is scare infact without checking I dont recall ever seeing one for 1938. Obviously it would of stood out straight away and therefore been put to one side rather than be used in circulation and thrown in a box.
I think its plated but a bit different so just keep it .

From all my research and your replies I too think it's plated. I can't imagine it being a complete one off. Its not magnetic. I'm going to get it properly weighed today, just out of interest. Thanks everyone.

I posted on this about a year ago. I have a 1938 cupronickel penny also. Saw one on a Hong Kong auction site that had same date. They listed it as a error coin. It was selling for 600 Hong Kong dollars. About $75 US.
