I took your excellent images and tried and tried to do an overlay, matching up elements on the Queen and obverse legend on both coins - and it was impossible... these are two different obverses. Look closely at the designers initials S.B., especially the 'S'

So - I did finally do an overlay, but I build a 12-sided frame in Adobe Illustrator and lined up the shapes of the coins (peak of the rim at the top being north). The beads are a little nearer to the rim with one Type, but their positions are unchanged. The RCM Logo is relatively unchanged, but the legend is the biggest change!! That is why we see the A of Elizabeth pointing to a bead in one Type, and not the other...

This is where computer-generated designs come into play. The font height is the same for both, but the kerning between the letters is less (tighter) with the A pointing to bead type (Type 1)

Those are pics of the same coin (#1?).I think you'll have to change a file name to get #2 to appear.

Dennman thank you so much for pointing that out. my mistake you have very good eyes. when you look at this photo. you will see the differences from type 1 to type 2 here is the image.there is another year in the loonie with a different obverse. but for right now we will stick with 2010.

wanted to photograph the type 1 and type2 again same lighting same mag. both images came out at 20MP each. so all I did was change the lighting. the coins are back inside 2x2. to be photographed. so every thing is the same. these coins was both cut out of specimen sets. as you can see they are numbered one after the other. there is no editing just resizing. to fit here ok here they are

I think I see a color tone change in the two loonies, type 2 being lighter on the tone, more post-2012-like / brass-like. Anyone else notice that?

Scissel & SPP-Ottawa - I know I'm revisiting an old thread but thought you might be able to help me. I'm getting back into collecting after years of dormancy and now want to branch into varieties. I've put together what I think is a comprehensive list of the *circulation* loonie varieities. Would you mind checking this list to see if I've either missed any major varieties or included any that weren't actually issued in circulation (or will be virtually impossible to find)? I'd really appreciate your help.

Pennyman, the list is mostly complete for circulation loon-style dollars. You are missing 2020 UN colored. And two 2021 Klondike dollars (colored and regular) that are coming in August.
2003 crowned was not issued for circulation to the best of my knowledge. Though there 2003 Crowned with circulation finish that were issued as RCM products. Same for 2000 and 2001 - they were not for general circulation, but once they are removed from their sets they look like normal business strike dollars.
As for varieties, I find it interesting that there were distinct dies for PL and NCLT strikes that differ in the device size and legend font on both obverse and reverse.
I know of 2 kinds for years 2006 to 2009 and for 2008 Lucky Loon - 1 circulation and 1 PL/GiftSets.
For 2010 there are 3 varieties for each Loon and Vancouver.
