Hello everyone,
As I am very green with this hobby of collecting currency. I am humbly asking for guidance as the various ways to get access to bills & coins to review. Currently, I have various banks that allow me to get bills and rolled coin, in addition I have one bank that has super accurate coin counting machines linked to my account that I use to dump my coin. I have a a seperate Monday, Wednesday, and Friday banks that order coins and provide bills. Since I have only been doing this for about a month, I am going through about $3000 In bills and about $1000 In rolled coin per week and while I occasionally find some keepers (silver mostly), I am literally rolling over 99.99% of what I touch.
What are other ways to get bills and coin to search through? I am literally spending hours every night going through the bank batches. Would love to hear how others are getting access to collectable currency?.
Thanks on advance Topekaguy

You should be checking for errors too. Most minor errors have no value but many of them are big bucks and might help your score.

Sounds like you're doing a good job already. You may want to try a bank that's farther away from the usual ones, especially if they're being supplied by a different Federal Reserve bank. They'll also take in a different batch of bills from the community.
Some people actually work at banks and have daily access to see what's coming in. Others know people at banks that save stuff for them. And, then, if you have a job that involves handling lots of small bills, you'll see plenty. But, what you're doing is probably the most efficient way.

Ron, thanks for the advice, I am making friends at the banks I pull from. So they put aside silver and look for anything non standard. Setting up an account in a nearby city (about 85 miles away) and pulling from them once or twice a month may provide something, thanks for the suggestion. If nothing else I now have good relationships with 6 different banks so they look for me, of course it costs me coffee, donuts, pizza, or other things but well worth it. Example, I found a bunch of 43 Steel Wheat Pennies in great shape, I carded and bagged a few and gave to my contacts at the bank, they loved them. Next day one of them had a roll of Ike's for me. It pays to be nice to those people.
Thanks again, For the guidance.

Moxking, is there a data you use that describes errors on Dollar Bill's? I have gotten pretty good educating myself to look for key errors on coins, but need to do better on bills.
Thanks Topekaguy

Exactly, what are you trying to collect?
Without knowing what you're looking for, It's hard to say. Buying donuts and coffee for the people at banks could have bought a nice bill at auction. .

Chopped, I guess I am different than most. What I look for is getting a complete set of coins and anything that has collectable value but I am trying to do that by searching currency in circulation. Of course value plays a role but I am not doing this as a money making endeavor, I just enjoy the search so to speak, over the last month I have completed 99% of post 1964 coins and from time to time I get a coin or two of the silver variety. So to answer your question, I am searching for gems in circulation.
Does that help?

Yes, but the time it takes to go through the coins and bills you go through , my mind would be numb and IF I was looking for errors under a glass, I'd probably have a headache. Good luck with your endeavor!

Chopped
I have a camera connected to a monitor that allows me to quickly look for the known errors and I only work one denomination at a time (with a cheat sheet) of the key errors.

Unless you have a job that gives you access to circulating cash or friends that do, it's hard to find cash to look through.
Probably the easiest way, would be to buy it. I do 99% of my banking online, but I know I can take $1,000 in Hundreds to my bank and ask for $1,000 in ones. My bank has eight offices in town, so I could turn the ones back in at a different branch and start all over the next day. I could also just make a withdrawal of $1,000, and ask for one dollar bills, and turn around and deposit them at a different branch.
I don't know if you enjoy this or not. It's seems to me to be somewhat tedious.
What are you looking for ? It's really, really hard to find anything of much value in circulating paper money. Maybe American Abroad will read this thread and chime in. I think he works at a bank in Europe and occasionally finds some cool stuff.........but he has access to LOTS of cash, some new.

That's a big chain and a big town. Over here, I get one walk-in bank. That's it. The rest are ATMs. I can't even get a $2 bill. I read on another site that TD Bank was pretty good at stocking $2 bills so, when I get some extra cash, I'm going to try to get a stack. Still, banks can be so clannish. If you're not a depositor, they don't want to know you.

I get you enjoy the search, and that's fine, but if you want anything collectible that's paper money, you'll most likely have to buy it elsewhere. Very rare do I see $1 errors or even silver certificates posted that people have found in circulation. A lot of them are likely picked out before you even get your hands on them.
If you are in a smaller town with few banks, you're likely to not have much turnover either.. so that means you end up searching the same stuff.

Thanks Wheatback, I get what you are saying and so far that has been exactly the case. Nearly 9,000 in dollar bills searched, no fancy serials, no errors, no mismatch serials, no color seals and only 5 star notes. I have had much more luck on the coin side. I do use 6 banks (different banks not branches of the same) with one that I use as my main dump bank as they have a really good coin counting machine that allows me to deposit coin without seeing a teller. The other five banks order boxes of coins or bills and put aside anything they think I would want (mostly silver) and the only limit they have is "if they have them". I vary the pickup Mon, Wed, and Fri with Sat being my coin dump day, then start all over. My dump bank allows at no charge the ability to PayPal $ to my paypal account and from there I can move it to any of the banks I deal with, which makes asking for coin and bills much easier. I have been surprised a few times, but for me each time I get a batch of coins and dollar bills it excites me and the process for me anyway is far more relaxing than my day job, allowing me to tune out. Someone out here suggested something I had not thought of, I travel overseas a great deal for work and typically exchange USD for local currency, next time I travel I will do the reverse as they love getting rid of USD. This site is extremely educational for people like me, but I feel collecting for most is based on the sale values versus no kidding checking a box or a really pretty coin being found in everyday currency. For me, I am not at a point where I feel the need to get on ebay or currency auctions. I may get there as many have suggested, but for now I see this as distraction from the daily grind, it is hard to allow corporate finances to creep in your mind when it is focused on all of the key "arts of imperfection" that could be (albeit extremely unlikely) found just by looking. I really hope that excitement does not change and replaced with cynicism, at that point it would no longer be fun. Thanks for your thoughts, they are very appreciated, Topekaguy

Ron,
I actually setup a checking account in 6 different banks, only 2 of them have coin counting capabilities but by linking my routing & account #'s to my PayPal account I can move $ to whatever bank I will be pulling from. The only requirement is to maintain a very low balance.
