I'm looking for the opinions and thoughts on exactly how much 90% "junk" silver actually gets melted down or has been melted down over the years. How often do dealers send perfectly good Kennedy halves or Washington quarters off to be melted? I know of two different dealers that are or were selling junk silver at melt so obviously there is not a shortage or an overall demand at this time. I would think the demand would go up for 90% silver down the road considering the number of coins minted is no where near the actual number of coins that exist.
Rest in Peace

Regardless of number melted the vast majority of coins put in the pot are either very common or worn to the point of having virtually no numismatic value.

Once in a while a goodie might be found, but not often.

It doesn't matter how many 64 P quarters were melted. Their remains enough to satisfy any possible collector demand including high grades.

You would need to be very young and live to be very old before most melt value coins would become numismatically valuable.

The collector demand for junk silver even at it's strongest point is just so minuscule it's not even funny.
I have never seen my LCS sell junk 90% silver at spot in the 10 years I've gone there.
The online vendors were just advertising selling at spot, last time I ordered (10% premium) I received some slick quarters.

Final note: I really don't see silver prices doing much in my lifetime, and I have decades to go, I hope.

There's millions and millions left probably 10% of households have some silver buried in the closet either minuscule or a Tang jar full of 1964 Kennedy's and then there's Grandpas silverdollars. I'm glad there's lots of junk silver I bought $50 face at 12.75 on Wendsday and will continue until they put me in the VA old soldiers home, ha!
Old worn Peace dollars, Walking halves, and nice Merc dimes just feel good don't they? I'm a Lincoln Cent collector, what am I doing on the precious metals blog? I better get back to safe territory in modern errors and variety.
