To me it looks like a much cleaned genuine coin. Fakers usually pick more popular types and then add some type of patina. Not the best pic to do this to, but I enhanced and zoomed in on what looks to me to be remainders of ancient encrustation.

I agree, and for exactly the same reasons.
I have seen much more deceiving fakes than this one.
This example may have been deliberately aged in an aggressive artificial soil, then cleaned.
I keep a reasonably large 'black' collection of ancient coins for my own education.
Rest in Peace

Looks authentic to me. I don't see anything that rings any alarm bells.

It's and over cleaned genuine coin. Someone got carried away and removed the patina.

Agreed, take a look at my over cleaned coin. Very Similar. I was trying out a new solution and used some of my hard to clean ones. It worked with taking the crust off but the patina is gone. I bought something that will tone it and I'm going to try it this weekend and I'll share.

does removing the patina really a bad thing if its extremely corroded and you cant make anything out?

doesn't change it being 2000 years old right?

Well if it's corroded, what will happen is that you will have a pitted mess. The crud fills in the pits and is what's keeping the coin smooth and actually helps in identifying the coin. So cleaning is an art form that I'm working on.

This coin I knew was not pitted, but I knew I was going to take the patina off. I can tone this with liver of sulfer which will darken it. But you will never get the patina back.

Well let's see here. I've been collecting and "conserving" ancient Romans for about 50 years now. I sometimes have had to over conserve. You long time collectors probably have also. LOL
