Pick this excellent coin up a few weeks ago from Steve.

Shapur I The Great was the second Sasanian emperor and son of Ardasir I from 240-270 AD. Shapur I is most norted for the capture of the Roman Emperor Valerian using him as a foot stool.

Sorry about that Dave, I'll see if I can clear it up a bit. Been using my smartphone camera, should probably use the regular one.

Better picture uploaded.

Great coin, Ron. Congratulations. The obverse crown is pretty amazing, but I especially like the rendition of the fire altar attendants on the reverse, with their own crowns and baggy trousers. Impressive depiction of that 3/4 view on the attendant at right, with the closer foot placed - correctly - lower than the far foot. Pretty advanced stuff for the time.

Good point Bob--the die cutter seems to have used perspective on the attendants. And Ron, I just want to be able to enjoy your coin more!

Thanks Bob. The detail on the earlier issued are much better that later on in the series. Don't know why the workmanship declined.

Thats a pretty coin Ron! Good detail on both sides..

Also read that some historians believe he had Valerian stuffed and displayed in his palace!

Nice pick up..
