Okay y'all, so tomorrow I'm planning on shelling out some pretty serious cash for an 1881 CC Morgan, that has a high chance of being a very high grade. I can't show pictures unfortunately, and it looks real. The strike is perfect for the real deal, as are the date and mint mark. What should I check aside from weight/size to make sure I'm not getting taken by a counterfeit?

Check weight, diameter, edge reeding. Some other things to look for are whether the coin looks similar to PCGS or NGC certified coins of the same date and mintmark, the size and shape of the mintmark, and whether the coin just looks "off". Also, make sure it passes the ping test. What do you think the coin grades? to the CCF!

I can't really help without any pics, and I'm also not very learned on Morgans. Is the seller trusted?

SilverDollar. I plan on checking all those, and yes it looks comparable to PCGS graded coins, and I've not seen it in person yet I'm certain it would grade bare minimum MS65. I'm purchasing from an app. And have not done business with this seller before. And know 1881 CC's have been faked. This doesn't look like those at all, but I am still aware of the possibilities of undiscovered counterfeit operations. If all looks good, I'll be posting pics here as well as the grading forum. Thank you for the prompt replies, it's greatly appreciated. Fingers crossed y'all.

Make sure it has the look of an authentic Morgan. There was a thread a few years ago where someone had the opportunity to purchase CC Morgans in original GSA plastic. Unfortunately, the images were links from photobucket and no longer there. One of them was an 1881 and all of them were better than the usual counterfeits from China. The obvious missing feature was cartwheel lustre. Do post images here when available for accurate assessments.

In all honesty no one that has to ask what they need to be looking for to authenticate something should be shelling out "pretty serious cash" on a raw coin.

I most typically stick with Eagles, Pandas, and just plain silver. I've been experienced in American silver coins of varying dates, just never been one for Morgan's. Been thinking of getting into them for a little while, and this seemed like a good one to start with in all actuality. Yet I do respect your opinion.

and yes, tread lightly. For purchases of that nature I would stay with an experienced seller, local coin shop or a coin show.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You get what you pay for.

It's weight is dead on, as well as being exactly 1.5 inches. Mint mark and reeding are greatly appropriate. I wouldn't have bought it if any red flags with any of those things went off. I appreciate all of your help, you've been awesome and very supportive. Any remarks as to condition?
