According to Sambhu Nath Mondal and his book "Ancient Indian Coins, Decoding of their Indus-Brahmi Inscriptions with special emphasis on the Punched Marked Coins" Hows that for a tile?

It is possible to ID the ruler on Punched-marked coins by their imaged and if enough punch marks and present and readable. . Each picture is translated into a Brahmi word or letter.

Here is AR Kashapana that if I'm reading the legend was struck during the time of Ashoka.

Please excuse my crude drawing. The first picture translates to the word Misitha.
#2 difficult to make out an pointed to by my arrow is the word GA.
#3, 4, and 5 translate to HSA.
#6 CHO

Which comes out to Misitha Gahasa Achokasa. Which is further translatecd into Ashoka.

The reverse is the word Cho, found on coins struck in Taxila.
Rest in Peace

Coins have certainly had many different avenues. But I don't have the patience you have for unraveling those details.

But I learned something new

Roman coins are very easy to read compared to most of the other ancient texts. I didn't know until recently that the punch marked images could be translated into a script.

Sounds like a new business venture Bob! Hop to it! Think of all the money you'd have to spend on new coins. Altho, there is a limited outlet for such isn't there....

Ron, any thoughts on why the punchmarks are all jumbled around rather than at least roughly in a line?

No idea Dave, but I guess there is some type of rule the way they appear on the coin. I know the character Misitha seems to always first.

Never would have guessed that. Any chance of being able to provide at least a partial breakdown of the associations he makes? Also curious to know how he came to the conclusion that the symbols could be transliterated to Brahmi

Steve, while the books is about ancient Indian coinage, it is mostly a book on Indian language from earliest time in Indian history. It covers many different types of scripts and symbols all which correspond to letters. I have to admit I've only read through the chapter on Mauryan coinage, so I don't really know yet how these symbols turned into letters. In a sense they resemble Egyptian Hieroglyphics. Throughout the book the he shows how these various symbols form a legend in a specific order. When we long at these coins, we see them as a jumbled group of marks. But there is a order to them and how they should be read no matter where the placement on the coin is. The book contains many charts of symbols and their translations from the Proto-Indic language into early modern times. It's a book that I will be spending a lot of hours with just to get a general idea. Luckily in the case of my coin it match to one that translated almost to the letter.
